Preliminary Task
One of the first tasks of my course was to work in groups to create a short video including a few techniques. These techniques were a shot reverse shot and a mach on action. As well as including these shots we had to make sure that we didn't break the 180 degree rule at any point throughout the video.
As the preliminary task is a simple task we expect to get it all filmed on 15/10/12 we believe this is achievable as we have 3 hours to work on it and it should all be filmed in under an hour.
We also plan to do all of our editing on the 15/10/12 as this should not take a long time as its only a rough task and we will have plenty of time as we have 3 hours where we can film and edit it.

180 degrees rule
The 180 degree rule says that if two people are talking there is an invisible line, and the camera must stay on one side of the line as shown in the picture to the side. This is important as if this rule was broken it would alter the position of the characters and this may confuse the audience.
Shot reverse shot
A shot reverse shot is basically a series of over the shoulder shots showing a conversation between two characters from alternate angles in a back and forth motion. this allows the audience to see both characters talking and it makes it clear that the conversation which the audience can here is between these two characters.
Mach on action
A mach on action shot is a cut made on action or movement between two shots in which the action has been overlapped either by repetition of the action or by the use of more than one camera. This could be the reading of a book as shown in the picture to the left.
Storyboards
Possible filming locations
For our preliminary task we decided on a conversation at a desk showing two friends talking. For this we looked around the school for classrooms we felt that none of these classrooms looked right for our preliminary task as they were too light and and they had too much stuff on the wall which would look out of place so we finally decided to use a pe classroom as it was dark and there was a skeleton which gave our film the sort of sciency lab feel we aimed for.
Editing
I movie
We edited our video on Imovie on the Apple Macs in school. This worked well as it is simple to use and effective at editing. Using this program we were able to make a smooth running film. This programs works well as it has many tools and effects available that are simple to use. One of these tools for example is the ability to add titles and text to the film.

9 frame story board
Shot 1
this is the first shot from our preliminary task. this basically a tittle screen for our film. We planned this shot in our initial story board and we feel it looks effective however i do think the font effect we used looks out of place as it doesn't go well with the back ground. This works well as the shot as it gives a hint to what the film is going to be about.
shot 2
This is the first shot of our footage in the film. this is a long shot showing our character walking into the room. we initially planned to have this shot taken from behind to show our mach on action however the camera didn't have enough battery so we had to do all our recording within the room so it could remain plugged in. The lighting in this shot looks dark, this is too set the mood for the film.
shot 3
this shot is an over the shoulder shot showing our two characters and a file. This shot is the first part of our shot revers shot sequence which we were required to include. in this shot the skeleton can also be seen which helps set the scene of this being a scary horror movie.
shot 4
This shot is another over the shoulder shot however this shot is taken from the opposite perspective showing the face of the other character, this is the second part of our shot reverse shot sequence.
shot 5
This shot is the third and final over the shoulder shot in our shot reverse shot sequence. This shot shows the conversation between the two characters continuing.
shot 6
The next shot is a close up shot of a document, this document is important as it adds sort of a little twist to the storyline of the film.
shot 7
This shot is a close up showing the women opening the door, This shot is part of the mach on action shot which was required in our film.
shot 8
This shot is a long shot, this shows the woman walking out of the room, this is also part of the mach on action shot which we had to include. the light in the corridor contrasts the light in the room, this could represent her walking into the light or leaving the man in darkness.
shot 9
These are the final credits of our preliminary task, for this we used a picture in the background to make it more interesting and to tie in with the storyline.
Lessons learnt for our final task
Although our final project is going to be a completely different film which will share very few similarities I will make sure that like in this preliminary task I do not break the 180 degree rule as this may confuse viewers to different characters positions. if I have any direct conversation between two characters I will use the shot reverse shot as this looks effective in my preliminary task and it makes it clear who the characters which are talking are. I will also try to include a Mach on action shot if possible as this shot clearly shows what the character is doing and it means my final project would have a larger range of shots.
